From beginning to end they were great, it's a small boutique hotel, so it was such a relief after a series of bad Chinese hotels to get this lovely haven of quiet in the middle traditional Hutong. You have a great modern hotel with all the quaint Chinese flair. It's centrally located, only 5 minutes walk from Dengshikou station (this is the closest) and about 10 minutes from Dongsi station. Within a 20 minutes walk radius you have the Wangfujing shopping district, where the street food stalls are the cleanest and most interesting, Tienanmen square and the Forbidden city. The staff were definitely the highlight of our China trip. They went out of their way to provide good service. We arrived early after a long overnight train ride, before check in time, but they were more than happy to provide us free breakfast and to store our luggage, plus some restuarant recommendations. The breakfast is simple, with a limited menu, but made fresh and with love everyday. The room was clean and the bed was the first soft bed we got in China. The walls are a little thin but most of the occupants of the hotel seem to be polite enough to keep their voices down. The bathroom has a rain shower, and I really enjoyed the organic amenities. The hotel also has a nice roofside courtyard to relax in, during the day or night, the hotel itself has drinks downstairs for the low low price of 15 rmb per drink. At the head of the Street to get to the hotel there is also great and delicious skewers on sale for 1 rmb each available at all times of the day/night. A big shout out of thanks to the staff who helped us out during our flights crisis. We managed to miss our flights in the middle of the night, and they were so helpful in contacting the airlines for us and sorting out new flights for us. The staff also helped us to print out maps and give advice on Beijing Transport. Fantastic hotel, I would recommend any of my friends here.

This place is terrific for anyone looking to see traditional China. It is in a genuine "hutong" or alley that is part of a network of hutongs that any guest here should wander through. The accommodation is clean, well appointed, well heated, with suitable bathroom/shower facilities. This is not elegance nor large rooms. It is comfortable, functional accommodation in a traditional courtyard. In the past, these courtyards were shared living space for a whole community, with each person/family/couple getting a room that surrounded a courtyard where cooking and open-air showering took place. This place retains the traditional feel of living around a shared courtyard but with the conveniences of modern accommodation. Everything here is comfortable and up to standard, but it is not meant to be 5* style. Rooms are somewhat small. Go there if you'd like to sense an older China and wander the hutongs. Subway is very close. Staff speak English and are very helpful. PS - I lived in China 4.5 years, first visited there in 1994, and stayed in about 80 hotels there. This was one of my most pleasant accommodations, but I prefer environment more than room service and luxury surroundings.

I booked this hotel as a surprise for my husband on his birthday - when we arrived there were no guests only us !! We were immediately upgraded to a room with a view of the Great Wall and our room was lovely - the view was outstanding !! As we were the only guests we had to inform them in the mornings if we were going to eat in the hotel - which we did every evening as the everything closed in the village at 6pm - the food was simple and tasty and big portions and the staff ( one lovely lady called Li ) took good care of us - I would definitely recommend this hotel even if it is in need of a good refurbish in the lobby the views are spectacular and well worth the money

This little boutique hostel is situated very close to Xi Si station in a central yet quiet hutong neighbourhood. For my week stay in Beijing, I booked a lovely single room which was super clean with an awesome shower. Breakfast was available every morning in the common room, which was a great little nook to meet other travellers and enjoy a beer in the evening. Lee and staff were very friendly and super helpful with onward travel suggestions and organising tours. The hostel offered bikes for hire which was awesome for an alternative way of getting around to see the sights. I also booked a Great Wall tour through the hostel - definitely one of the highlights of my big adventure through China. All in all, loved my stay here and cannot recommend it enough.

It was a great experience staying in a hutong house hotel with only 8 rooms total. My kids (8 & 11 yrs old) enjoyed it because there were things for them to do. The location was 15 minute walk from the subway (recommended means of travel - clean, quick and cheap fare). English speaking staff were nice and helpful in setting up tours and shows. Restaurants nearby were good and inexpensive.

This is a beautiful, unique property. My husband and I spent two nights there on our first trip to Beijing. I can't imagine a better way to get acquainted with the hutong culture of the city. The rooms were gorgeous and unique, and the staff was super friendly. I've read other reviews that noted the language barrier and value for the money -- yes, we had a bit of a language barrier, but if you're looking for a five star western hotel I hear The W and the Intercontinental are lovely. But if you want a unique Beijing experience, Duge can't be beat! Highly recommend!

We stayed here in March This place is just great, in fact we loved it so much that we stayed twice! This place just made our visit to Beijing. On arrival, (having followed their directions, thus finding it first time) the check in was one of the best we've had for a long while. It was quick and easy, and we were then given a map with all the sights, and details of when best to go and how to get there, and all done with charm and a sense of humour. The rooms themselves I think have previously been described as not that big, but they were a good size, extremely comfortable and very clean. This place has a great social area, the inner courtyard was interesting and a good place to meet other travellers. The food that they served there as well was just awesome, big dishes of chinese food that was extremely tasty and great value for money...as was the beer in the fridge! We took an excursion with them to The Great Wall of China and it was a good day out. Overall the service and the comfort of room was excellent and it's difficult to find fault. We would highly recommend and would stay again.

Migrant Bird Hotel is part of a complex of hotels and residences for people who need to live close to the port with Hong Kong. You're looking at Hong Kong from your balcony! (not the skyline, of course, but the countryside). It's a 'temporary' hotel, meaning they get a block of rooms in a building to manage; then they set up operations in one of the rooms; there is no signage, no lobby, etc. Very nice room, and friendly (non English speaking) staff. If you can get along with the following three things, then you'll have a great stay here: First, it's possible to walk to the metro station, but much harder than you'd expect because of the multiple barriers to pedestrian traffic: be prepared to take a taxi as your first and last step every day. Not a big deal for me. Second, the noise from the street below is an all-day, all-night affair. The trucks going through make a constant noise, and periodically everybody honks their horns. Not such a dealbreaker from the 22nd floor. If you can sleep in Manhattan you can sleep here. Third, there was the question of whether a foreigner is technically supposed to stay here: I think probably not, so if you're concerned about having your passport examined once or twice by a frowning official then maybe this isn't the place for you. But it was definitely the place for me--
