The Coen brothers. The Safdie brothers. The Winklevoss twins. Often Americans are fascinated by business partners who's success runs in tandem to their blood relation. The Shirk twins, namely Blake and Brandon, are in my opinion on such an upward trajectory. As new hoteliers they have constructed a business model most similar to Yotel's futuristic pods in Manhattan or Norwegian Cruise Lines' single-occupancy cabins, with variances on neo-luxury hostel franchises such as The Freehand. Businesses such as these, but particularly the SOVA in Dallas, are capitalizing on a North American generational shift which prioritizes experiences over products, design over brand name, and relationships over the cold fine print of outsized corporate chains. The design of the reception/social area and rooms are sleek and inviting. As I entered the front door there was a fresh coat of blue paint drying on the adjoining walls, ostensibly intended to relax and invite. While trading travel tales with owner Blake, he explained how the beautifully polished one-piece coffee bar had been sourced in Jalisco, MX along with other furniture on site. The rooms would equally bedazzle any value-conscious traveler, sporting a bidet (!) and mattresses designed for dozing in that priceless REM stage (think of how inefficient your travel life already is without adequate hygiene and rest and you begin to realize the huge power of what is branded 'micro'.) By prioritizing these creature comforts, SOVA realizes efficiencies for owners and customers alike. Less space means less space to clean for housekeeping, less furniture to reupholster or appliances to fix by maintenance, and ultimately less time for rooms to be turned over and made spotless. For guests, that means longer times afforded to recuperate and enjoy their rooms and its amenities, and ultimately more choice in how their downtime is spent.
